Update: Ex-MEAT PUPPETS Bassist Makes Court Appearance
December 31, 2003Ex-MEAT PUPPETS bassist Cris Kirkwood made his initial appearance in federal court on Tuesday (Dec. 30) in a wheelchair and hospital gown, grimacing alternately from pain and exasperation, according to the Arizona Republic. His federal public defender, Jane McClellan, said he would spend the night at a federal detention facility in Florence, despite his gunshot wound, and then be returned to federal court today for a detention hearing to determine if he can be released on bond.
"Our position is that Mr. Kirkwood should be detained," Assistant U.S. Attorney Kurt Altman said.
Altman argued that Kirkwood, who has previous drug convictions, would be a flight risk and a danger to the public.
Kirkwood, 43, was charged Saturday with assault with a deadly weapon in connection with a Friday night melee at the downtown Phoenix post office.
Kirkwood is accused of taking a baton from a post office security guard and hitting him over the head with it after a dispute over a parking space. The guard, Thomas Goodrum, shotKirkwood in the back.
